Initially, the elections had been scheduled to take place between July 5 and July 26, 2026. However, the High Court in Kisumu issued orders stopping the process after a petition was filed challenging the manner in which the elections were being conducted.

The National Youth Council (NYC) elections have been postponed to October after the High Court in Kisumu halted the process over claims that the exercise had failed to meet key legal requirements.
In a gazette notice dated July 10, 2026, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced that ward elections will now be held on October 9, followed by constituency elections on October 16 and National Youth Congress elections on October 30, 2026, to allow compliance with voter education requirements under the NYC election regulations.
Mvurya said the decision to postpone the elections was made under Regulation 19(3) of the National Youth Council (Election of Certain Council Members) Regulations, 2021.
“The postponement has been necessitated to ensure compliance with the voter education requirements pursuant to Regulation 21 of the National Youth Council (Election of Certain Council Members) Regulations, 2021,” reads the notice.
Initially, the elections had been scheduled to take place between July 5 and July 26, 2026. However, the High Court in Kisumu issued orders stopping the process after a petition was filed challenging the manner in which the elections were being conducted.
Justice Alfred Mabeya suspended the exercise after hearing submissions from the petitioner’s lawyer, directing that the elections should not proceed until the case is heard and determined.
The court barred the respondents, their agents and servants from conducting or continuing with the NYC ward, constituency and National Youth Congress elections until they fully comply with the National Youth Council (Election of Certain Council Members) Regulations, 2021.
Justice Mabeya also directed the respondents to publish a verified and publicly accessible final voters’ register as part of measures to ensure the election process follows the law.
The orders were issued following a petition by Austine Ogalo, who argued that the planned elections were in breach of the Constitution and the NYC election regulations.
Ogalo claimed that the process lacked transparency, citing the absence of a publicly available final voters’ register, failure to publish a list of cleared candidates, inadequate civic education, poor communication on the election process, and failure to establish and gazette constituency election steering committees and appoint election officials.
He argued that the issues raised violated constitutional provisions on transparency, access to information and youth participation, while putting millions of young Kenyans at risk of being left out of the electoral process.
Justice Mabeya said the reasons for granting the conservatory orders will be provided in a detailed ruling scheduled for September 18, 2026.
