Family seeks justice after body of missing Form Three student found in Bahati, Nairobi

Arafat had been in Nairobi for just one month, spending the school holidays with his family in Eastleigh.
Family members of Arafat Mohamed gathered at the City Mortuary on Sunday after his body was discovered in Bahati. Arafat's mother, Nadifo Nunow, confirmed the body as her son's, citing visible marks on his neck and blood stains on his mouth. The family is now demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Arafat, a 20-year-old Form Three student from Mandera town, had been in Nairobi for just one month, spending the school holidays with his family in Eastleigh. On Friday, he told his mother he planned to visit a swimming pool in Kimathi, Makadara Constituency, with his younger brother.

According to Nadifo, Arafat returned home from the mosque on Friday before heading out to the swimming pool. That evening, she called his phone around 9 p.m. to check on him. The call was answered by Arafat's brother, who informed her that Arafat had left his phone at the shop. Nadifo tried calling again at midnight, but by then, the shop was closed, and the brother had gone to bed.
On Saturday, Nadifo visited the shop to inquire further. The brother clarified that he had not accompanied Arafat to the swimming pool but said that the two younger brothers had gone with him. When questioned, the younger brothers revealed that after swimming, an unidentified man approached Arafat. He instructed them to go home, saying he would return later. That was the last time they saw him alive.

Concerned, Nadifo went to the swimming pool, where she found Arafat's name in the register. She reported his disappearance at Jogoo Road Police Station but was informed that a missing person report could only be filed 48 hours after the disappearance.
Police call
On Sunday morning, the family received a call from the police, informing them that Arafat's body had been found near the Nairobi River and that the body had been taken to the City Mortuary.
Speaking to The Eastleigh Voice, Nadifo expressed her anguish. "I have confirmed the body is his. He has marks on his neck and blood stains on his mouth. I don't understand why or who killed my son," she said.
Arafat's aunt, Hawa Aden, recounted the version given by her sons, who were with Arafat at the swimming pool. They reported that a man with long hair had approached Arafat and taken him away. Unable to intervene, they returned home.

"When I called the police on Sunday, they informed me about Arafat's death without providing any explanation. We want justice," said Hawa.
Another aunt, Shaiye Kusow, broke down after identifying Arafat's body. She called for immediate investigations to uncover the cause of death and bring those responsible to justice.
Police have confirmed that an investigation into Arafat Mohamed's death has begun. However, no further details about suspects or motives have been released.
Arafat's death has left his family and the community in shock. Known as a quiet and caring person, he had been eagerly anticipating his return to school in Mandera after the holiday.
The family continues to mourn their loss while urging authorities to expedite the investigation and ensure justice is served.
