Following the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes that struck Venezuela just seconds apart last week, authorities continue to assess the scale of the disaster. According to figures compiled by the Venezuelan government, the opposition, UNICEF, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the earthquakes caused widespread devastation, triggering a major humanitarian response.
At least 1,943 people were killed, while more than 10,500 others were injured. The disaster also left about 16,000 people homeless, with around 43,000 still missing. Rescue teams have so far pulled more than 6,400 people from the rubble, while 59,000 buildings sustained damage.
The humanitarian response remains underway, with 54 urban search and rescue teams, comprising 2,434 personnel and 185 search dogs, deployed to affected areas. Meanwhile, about 680,000 children are in need of humanitarian assistance as relief efforts continue.
