In a statement, KAA expressed gratitude to passengers, airline staff, and the public for their cooperation during the short disruption.
“We remain committed to maintaining safe, secure, and efficient airport operations at JKIA,” said Dr Mohamud Gedi, Acting Managing Director and CEO of KAA.
The authority reassured the public that all measures have been put in place to ensure smooth airport operations and minimise inconvenience for travellers in the future.
Operations had been temporarily suspended after a security incident during the arrival of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s remains. KCAA said the disruption was caused by large crowds of mourners gaining access to restricted areas.
The authority explained that the unexpected influx forced officials to momentarily close the airport to ensure safety.
A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued to alert aviation stakeholders of the temporary suspension. KCAA said normal operations were expected to resume within two hours once security teams completed their assessment.
The late Raila’s body arrived from India earlier today, drawing large numbers of mourners both at the airport and across Nairobi.
During the arrival, hundreds of supporters, including boda boda riders, breached barricades and entered restricted areas, disrupting the official reception. Some climbed the perimeter walls, waving twigs and chanting Raila’s name, while others pushed past security officers, overwhelming the joint teams of military personnel and General Service Unit (GSU) officers on duty.
Despite the surge, mourners maintained a largely peaceful atmosphere, singing Raila’s popular slogan, "Jowie," as the casket was received. Security personnel later regained control and restored order, allowing the procession to continue its journey to the Lee Funeral Home ahead of the public viewing at Parliament buildings. The casket is currently being transported from JKIA along Mombasa Road to the funeral
