Ford Foundation denies allegations of funding anarchy in Kenya

The Foundation's president, Darren Walker, emphasised the complete online records that indicate how monies are used in Kenya.

US-based Ford Foundation refuted allegations on Friday that it had sponsored 16 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to incite anarchy in Kenya. This statement followed the receipt of a letter from Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, questioning its financial activities in the country.

The Ford Foundation clarified that its operations in Kenya are solely for charitable purposes, emphasizing that information about its activities and funding is transparently available on its website.

The Foundation's president, Darren Walker, emphasised the complete online records that indicate how monies are used in Kenya.

Walker stated, "While we continue to acknowledge the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country, we repudiate any actions or speech that are hateful or advocate violence against any institution, individual, or community."

The Foundation reaffirmed its dedication to building on its 60-year legacy in Kenya and the broader East African region. This commitment, according to Walker, remains steadfast despite the recent allegations.

The allegations surfaced shortly after Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'Oei wrote to the Ford Foundation, demanding an accountability report.

The letter, obtained by The Eastleigh Voice, accused the Foundation of disbursing at least Sh752 million to Kenyan organizations between April 2023 and May 2024. PS Sing'Oei's letter requested a detailed disclosure of all grantees over the past year, including the approved programs and budgets for the last three months.

The letter read, "You will concede that the above funds disbursed to non-state recipients are substantial and require prudent use to serve legitimate purposes or risk abuse to aid nefarious ends. Their conduct also fundamentally flouts Ford Foundation’s Non-Lobbying Policy, begging the question of whether your Foundation has abandoned this policy and is now intent on adversely influencing the internal political and policy processes within the Republic of Kenya."
