“The man managed to escape but with life-threatening injuries. Police are still pursuing him,” an officer said.
During the operation, officers recovered a firearm belonging to Ayieko.
The weapon, stolen on the day of his death on October 23, originally contained 14 rounds of ammunition, though it was found empty at the time of its recovery.
The arrest marks the latest development in the ongoing investigation into Ayieko’s death. Investigators believe the detained woman holds critical information regarding the case.
On Tuesday, police apprehended another suspect, Victor Ouma Okoth, from his hideout in Charity, Dandora Phase Four, Nairobi.
Authorities have yet to confirm if Okoth and the suspect who fled are the individuals seen on CCTV after abandoning Ayieko’s orange Ford Ranger double-cab in Siaya shortly after his disappearance.
On Friday, October 25, Okoth approached a caretaker in Dandora, introducing himself as a teacher and expressing interest in a vacant apartment in a four-story building in Charity area.
He said to have returned to the apartment later with new furniture, including a bed, mattress, and a sofa set, which were visible through the window.
Additional belongings included a table, television, sub-woofer, and personal items such as shoes and a briefcase.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), including teams from the Homicide Unit, Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB), and Operations Unit, swept the Dandora area, ultimately detaining Okoth at a terminus and transferring him to Muthaiga Police Station.
DCI boss Mohamed Amin confirmed Okoth’s arrest.
"The suspect was placed at the scene of the crime through forensic analysis," Amin said.
The investigation has expanded to include financial transactions, as at least two M-Pesa agents have been questioned over money withdrawals linked to Ayieko’s phone.
Sources indicate Ayieko was involved in an internal Wells Fargo probe investigating a Sh94 million heist in November 2023, where rogue employees allegedly intercepted funds in transit from QuickMart Supermarket to a bank on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.
Ayieko went missing on Friday, October 18, after visiting a bereaved family in Muhanda, Nyamninia, within Gem Sub-County, and was supposed to travel to Kakamega County for a social gathering the following day.
His assailants are believed to be well-acquainted with Siaya’s geography, as they avoided main highways, opting for feeder roads.
