Senate convenes special sitting to hear Governor Nyaribo’s impeachment charges
The Senate sitting marks the third formal attempt to remove Governor Nyaribo, reflecting deep divisions within the county’s political leadership.
The Senate has gazetted a special sitting this afternoon to hear charges against Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, a day after the County Assembly voted to impeach him over allegations of abuse of office and violation of legal procedures.
According to a Gazette notice dated November 27, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the House will sit at 2:30 pm to consider the motion seeking Nyaribo’s removal.

“Pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution and Section 33 of the County Governments Act, I have appointed Thursday, November 27, 2025, at 2:30 pm as the sitting convened for the purpose of hearing the charges against Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo,” reads the notice.
The impeachment motion, introduced by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accuses Nyaribo of abuse of office, mismanagement of public funds and irregular appointments.
Specific allegations include conducting county business through unauthorised Bunge Mashinani sittings, approving county funds to endorse Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as County Agriculture Minister during a period of unstable leadership, unlawfully appointing committee members for Keroka town and setting up a Public Service Board recruitment panel outside official channels between October 2024 and June 2025.
At the County Assembly session, 23 of 28 present MCAs voted in favour of the impeachment, while 12 members stayed away. Speaker Thadeus Nyabaro allowed six MCAs to vote on behalf of absent colleagues to meet the threshold required to transmit the motion to the Senate.
Those who voted on behalf of absent members included Alfayo Ngeresa Mabera (Mekenene Ward), Emmanuel Gisesa (Rigoma Ward), Joel Ombongi (Bokeira Ward), Lameck Sikweya Onyancha (Itibo Ward), Julius Nyangana (Bobwagamo Ward), Henry Obwaya (Gachuba Ward), Jeria Nyakangi (Nominated), Priscilla Nyatichi (Nominated) and Elijah Abere (Nominated).
Nyaribo, who assumed office in late 2020 following the death of his predecessor, John Nyagarama, has previously survived two impeachment attempts. His legal team has indicated they may challenge the current process, citing Senate precedents where similar motions against Isiolo’s Abdi Guyo and Kericho’s Eric Mutai were dismissed on technical grounds.
The impeachment proceedings are now officially in the hands of the Senate, which will decide whether to form a special committee to investigate the charges or to hear the case in plenary. If upheld, Nyaribo will be removed from office; if rejected, he will continue as governor.
The hearing is expected to attract national attention, highlighting ongoing political tensions within Nyamira County.
The Senate sitting marks the third formal attempt to remove Governor Nyaribo, reflecting deep divisions within the county’s political leadership.
Previous bids in October 2023 and September 2024 were unsuccessful due to procedural challenges and failure to meet the required thresholds.
