Hyena on the loose in Syokimau with KWS saying animal may be moving through JKIA-Katani bushland

KWS also called on the public to report any wildlife sightings immediately to the nearest KWS office or local authorities to support rapid response efforts.

A hyena is on the loose in Syokimau, with wildlife officials working to track its path after its fresh tracks were spotted along Mwananchi Road off Eastport Drive on Sunday, May 10, 2026.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said they have intensified surveillance in the area, even though the animal was not directly sighted by response teams.

The agency said Problem Animal Control (PAC) teams were dispatched to the scene, but the hyena was not physically seen during the operation.

However, officers confirmed fresh footprints, which indicated that the animal had recently moved through the area.

KWS said surveillance and monitoring efforts have since been stepped up, with preliminary findings suggesting the hyena could be moving through bushy and isolated land behind Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) towards Katani.

The wildlife agency urged residents to remain calm, noting that all necessary precautionary measures were already in place.

“KWS wishes to assure the public that all necessary precautionary measures are being undertaken and there is no cause for panic,” the agency said.

At the same time, residents have been urged to stay alert, avoid approaching or provoking any wild animals, and ensure children are closely supervised, especially in areas near bushy or open terrain.

KWS also called on the public to report any wildlife sightings immediately to the nearest KWS office or local authorities to support rapid response efforts.

The agency said it remains committed to safeguarding both human life and wildlife as monitoring operations continue in the area.
