Security forces foil Al-Shabaab attack in Mandera following intense firefight

Security officials said the attackers launched the assault using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and PK machine guns before officers responded and repelled them, forcing the militia to retreat.

Three police officers were injured after suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a Special Operations Group (SOG) camp in Fino, Lafey Sub-County, Mandera County, on Friday night, triggering a brief but intense firefight.
Security officials said the attackers launched the assault using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and PK machine guns before officers responded and repelled them, forcing the militia to retreat.
The injured officers were taken for treatment as security agencies mounted an operation to pursue the assailants. No officers were killed in the incident.
A manhunt for the militants who escaped has since been launched, and security has been beefed up in the area to avert repeat attacks.
The group has repeatedly attempted assaults on the camp, including in December last year when the militia fired two RPGs, prompting officers to engage and drive them into nearby bushes.

Security agencies said the swift response of the officers successfully repulsed the enemy, leaving all officers accounted for, with no casualties reported.
The incident occurred two weeks after security agencies in the same region repulsed another attempt by Al-Shabaab militia to force entry into a Chinese contractor’s residence located about a kilometre from Elwak Police Station.
On Wednesday, police officers in Mandera foiled another attempted attack after suspected militants targeted the Jabi Quick Response Unit (QRU) Camp in Lafey Sub-County shortly after 7:00 pm.
Kenya continues to face heightened vulnerability to terrorism due to cross-border spillovers from neighbouring conflict zones.
Reports show that although the overall scale of attacks has declined, targeted and cross-border incidents persist, underscoring the resilience and adaptability of violent extremist networks in the region.
