The government has released Sh1.8 billion in cash transfers to support 133,484 vulnerable households in eight arid counties as part of efforts to cushion families against drought and economic hardships.

The government has disbursed Sh1.8 billion to 133,484 poor and vulnerable households in eight arid counties under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP), covering cash transfers for the February to June 2026 payment cycles.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) said Sh1,802,260,800 had been credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts in Mandera, Wajir, Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu and Tana River counties.
"The Government, through the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), has disbursed Sh1,802,260,800 as cash transfers to 133,484 poor and vulnerable households registered under the Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP) for the February, March, April, May and June 2026 payment cycles," said NDMA.
Each registered household receives an unconditional monthly stipend of Sh2,700 to help meet basic needs and strengthen resilience against economic shocks.
"The cash stipends form part of the Government's broader push to shield drought-exposed households by providing critical consumption support, enabling them to buy food and other essentials and reducing distress sales of livestock and other productive assets during dry spells," the authority said.
Turkana received the largest allocation at Sh537.9 million, benefiting 39,843 households. Mandera followed with Sh299.2 million for 22,168 households, while Marsabit received Sh275.5 million for 20,410 households.
Wajir was allocated Sh259.2 million for 19,170 households, Garissa received Sh124.8 million for 9,243 households, Samburu Sh111.8 million for 8,286 households, Tana River Sh99.4 million for 7,364 households and Isiolo Sh94.5 million for 7,000 households.
The NDMA said beneficiaries will receive their cash transfers through Equity Bank and Kenya Commercial Bank agents and branches after the authority issued formal authorisation letters to facilitate the disbursement.
"Registered beneficiaries with pending concerns are advised to contact their nearest bank branch or the county NDMA offices to update their details in order to access their stipends," the authority said.
The HSNP is a Vision 2030 flagship project under the National Safety Net Programme, Inua Jamii, supporting poor and vulnerable households in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid counties.
