A protected prosecution witness told the High Court in Kibera that he unknowingly ferried the alleged gunman on the day Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were was killed and was later paid Sh50,000 for the trip.

A protected prosecution witness on Tuesday told the High Court in Kibera that he unknowingly transported the man accused of fatally shooting Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were on the day of the killing before later receiving Sh50,000 for the trip.
Testifying before Justice Diana Kavedza under tight security, the witness, who is the eighth prosecution witness, said he received a call to go to Jacaranda Estate, where he picked up the first suspect on his motorcycle.
He told the court that they first stopped at a car wash, where they had a meal, before proceeding to Buruburu to meet another man who was driving a white Toyota Crown.
According to the witness, the motorcycle and the Toyota Crown then travelled together towards Nairobi's central business district, stopping at a petrol station along Jogoo Road, where the Toyota Crown driver paid for fuel.
The witness testified that one of the suspects was carrying a small bag and instructed him to wait while they monitored movements around Parliament and the MP's vehicle.
He further told the court that he followed the MP's vehicle along Kenyatta Avenue, Valley Road and Hurlingham before reaching the Daystar University roundabout.
"He told me to stop because there was traffic ahead," the witness told the court.
Moments later, the witness said he heard gunshots before the suspect ran back to the motorcycle.
"He jumped onto the motorcycle and ordered me to leave immediately," the witness testified.
The court heard that they rode back to Buruburu, where they parted ways. The witness said he was later paid Sh50,000 and insisted that he had no idea a murder was about to be committed.
"I believed I had only been hired to provide transport. I did not know there was a plan to kill anyone," he told the court.
The witness's testimony places the alleged gunman and the driver of the Toyota Crown together in the hours leading up to the fatal shooting, providing the prosecution with key evidence as it seeks to link the accused to the murder of the Kasipul legislator.
The hearing continues before Justice Diana Kavedza.
