However, police reported that some ammunition was missing. Of the original 90 bullets, only 10 were returned.
The handover followed a violent incident in which gunmen, believed to be members of the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), launched an assault on Kenyan police officers at Border Point 4 in Mandera.
The attack took place on Friday and resulted in the death of one police officer. Another officer sustained a gunshot wound in his left upper arm and is currently receiving treatment at the Mandera Referral Hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition.
According to a police report, the gunmen also took firearms from the officers during the attack.
Kenyan authorities have linked the incident to a foiled abduction of a Chinese national by suspected terrorists who have since been arrested.
“The motive of the attack was the revenge of the previous arrest of terror suspects (aborted Chinese abduction), and the attack was coordinated by a brother of one of the suspects who is a NISA officer, as per information from Somalia authorities,” the report states.
Mandera County has experienced frequent security incidents linked to militant groups and cross-border criminal activities.
The latest attack has heightened tensions between security agencies from both countries.
Kenyan authorities are expected to continue engaging their Somali counterparts to address border security concerns and prevent further incidents.
