Leaders pay tribute to Garissa community elder Sheikh Dubat Ali Amey who shaped justice and peace

Leaders in Garissa and beyond are mourning elder Sheikh Dubat Ali Amey, a long-serving community leader and peacemaker whose work on justice, rights and livelihoods shaped Northern Kenya.

Several leaders have sent messages of condolence following the death of Garissa elder Sheikh Dubat Ali Amey, who passed away on Saturday after a long illness.
The messages described him as a community leader who served Northern Kenya for many years and remained active in public life even after leaving formal positions.
Garissa Governor Nathif Jama said he was saddened by the death and described Dubat as a leader who served the county with commitment from his early years in government service to his later leadership roles. He said Dubat began his career in 1964 as a clerk in the Garissa Provincial Commissioner’s office before rising to serve as chairman of both the former Garissa County Council and Ijara County Council. He added that Dubat continued to support the community even after leaving public office.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Mzee Dubat Ali Amey earlier today,” the governor said. “He served the people of Garissa with dedication and sincerity of purpose throughout his life.”
The governor also said he had lost a personal friend and noted that Dubat had been recognised on several occasions for his service to the people of Garissa, including support for persons living with disabilities. He said the county had lost a leader whose absence would be felt across the community.

Health Cabinet Secretary Adan Bare Duale also mourned Dubat, describing him as an elder and a peacemaker who played a key role in guiding the community. He said Dubat was known for advocating justice and fairness and for bringing people together during difficult times.
“We mourn the passing of our father, friend, elder and peacemaker, Marhum Mzee Dubat Ali Amey,” he said.
Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan said Dubat used his voice to highlight the challenges facing people in Northern Kenya and remained committed to issues of justice and equal treatment. He said Dubat contributed to civil rights discussions and stood with communities facing hardship.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Awo Dubat Ali Amey,” he said. “He was a defender of civil rights and a champion of equity and social justice.”
Other leaders also sent condolence messages to the family, describing Dubat as a respected figure whose work touched many lives in Garissa and beyond.
Dubat was widely known across Northern Kenya as a community elder and leader. He was born and lived in Garissa and spent much of his life working with local communities and leaders.
During his career, he held several leadership positions, including serving as chairman of the Kenya Livestock Marketing Council and the National Farmers Federation. In these roles, he worked with farmers and pastoralist communities and advocated for improved livestock markets and stronger rural livelihoods.
He also participated in Kenya’s constitutional review process as a delegate, contributing to discussions on human rights, justice, and reconciliation. His involvement placed him among leaders who helped shape national conversations on governance and equality.
Many described him as a leader who spoke openly about issues affecting Northern Kenya, including development, peace, and security. He often raised concerns about inequality and called for fair distribution of resources.
His work over the years earned him recognition from both leaders and residents, and he remained active in community affairs even in his later years.
