Garissa on high alert as meteorological department Issues high flood warning for River Tana

Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a high flood alert for River Tana, warning that continued rains could raise water levels at Garissa gauge station above the flood threshold within days. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to prepare.

Garissa residents have been warned as authorities raise concern over a growing flood threat along the River Tana, following heavy rainfall and rising water levels in key upstream dams and river systems.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a high flood alert, warning that continued rainfall across the basin could trigger flooding in vulnerable areas within the next few days. In its latest early warning bulletin, the agency said moderate to heavy rains are expected between April 28 and May 4, following a week of persistent rainfall in several parts of the country.
The agency further indicated that water levels at the Garissa gauge station are expected to rise sharply, potentially reaching about 6.4 metres by May 2—well above the 5.0-metre flood warning threshold.
“This level indicates a high likelihood of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas,” the agency said in its advisory.
High-risk areas identified include Garissa, Hola, and Garsen, where residents living near riverbanks have been urged to remain on high alert. Authorities warn that continued rises in water levels could disrupt transport, displace families, and affect livelihoods across the wider River Tana basin.

Residents have been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, move to higher ground where necessary, and strictly follow instructions from local authorities and emergency response teams. The public has also been encouraged to rely on official updates from the meteorological department as conditions continue to evolve.
Developments in major upstream dams have also heightened concerns.
Garissa Women Representative Udgoon Siyad has urged residents to take immediate precautions, warning of increased water releases and the risk of rapid downstream flooding.
“My people, please take this message seriously. Masinga Dam has reached full capacity, and water is already being released downstream. We now expect the Kiambere Dam to spill within the next five days. This will cause water levels along the River Tana to rise rapidly and could lead to flooding in low-lying areas,” she said.
She further urged residents living near the river and in flood-prone zones to move to higher ground immediately, advising them not to wait until conditions worsen, especially at night. She also called for the early evacuation of children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups, and encouraged people to carry essential items and important documents.
“We have seen before how quickly these floods can escalate. Acting early will save lives,” she added, while also calling on the Garissa County Government, chiefs, elders, religious leaders, and youth to help spread the message to all households.
