State lodge, stadium, airport expansion underway as Wajir prepares for Madaraka Day

Wajir ramps up major infrastructure works, including a State Lodge, stadium, and airport upgrades, as it prepares to host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations for the first time.

As Wajir prepares to host the 2026 Madaraka Day celebrations for the first time in history, the government has stepped up construction of the Wajir State Lodge alongside other major infrastructure projects, in what officials describe as a renewed drive to transform the historically marginalised North Eastern region.
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration said on Sunday that the State Lodge under construction recognises the region’s historical significance and its long-standing presidential engagements with North Eastern Kenya.
“The construction of the Wajir State Lodge, as part of the Madaraka Day 2026 National Celebrations, recognises the region’s historical significance and the long-standing presidential engagements with the North Eastern region,” the ministry stated.
“The North will no longer continue being the prodigal son who comes home late to join his siblings on the table of government facilities and nation-building.”
According to the ministry, State Lodges are strategic national assets situated outside State House, Nairobi, and are designed to strengthen the role of counties in governance, development, and national administration.

It further explained that the facilities are meant to position counties not only as recipients of national policy, but also as active participants in shaping Kenya’s governance and development agenda.
“It is in these lodges where negotiations and high-level meetings on governance, development, national security and administration are hosted, with many of the decisions made directly impacting the regions in which the lodges are located,” the ministry said.
The developments come as Wajir intensifies preparations to host the national Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2026, with works reported to be at an advanced stage.
Key among the ongoing projects is the construction of the 10,000-seater Wajir International Stadium, which will serve as the main venue for the celebrations.
Other works include the expansion of Wajir International Airport, the upgrading of municipal roads, the rehabilitation of drainage systems, and the installation of street lighting across the town.
Authorities say the projects aim to improve mobility and strengthen Wajir’s urban infrastructure ahead of the national event.
