Help Malindi regain its glory as a premier tourist destination

By |

The decline in tourism has had a visible impact on the local economy. Businesses that once thrived on the influx of visitors are now struggling, and the vibrant energy that once characterised Malindi is conspicuously missing.

I spent my weekend in Malindi. Known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs, Malindi is a popular tourist destination. I had gone to a friend’s wedding but had time to walk around the small town.

However, my visit revealed a sobering reality: Malindi, once a bustling tourism hub, now stands in stark contrast to its vibrant past. The once-lively town now grapples with the silence of abandonment, leaving me profoundly concerned for its future.

Malindi was once renowned for its beautiful beaches, vibrant markets, and bustling hotels. It was a destination where tourists from Kenya and around the world flocked to enjoy the blue waters, rich history, and warm hospitality.

Unfortunately, during my visit, I witnessed a town struggling under the weight of neglect. Many hotels were closed and falling into disrepair, and the streets, once filled with the hum of tourist activity, were eerily quiet.

The decline in tourism has had a visible impact on the local economy. Businesses that once thrived on the influx of visitors are now struggling, and the vibrant energy that once characterised Malindi is conspicuously missing. The state of the town’s infrastructure —abandoned buildings, poorly maintained facilities, and neglected public spaces — only exacerbates the situation.

This is not just a matter of lost revenue; it’s a question of community vitality and economic stability. Malindi’s decline affects not only its businesses but also the people who rely on tourism for their livelihoods. The town’s charm and potential are being overshadowed by neglect, and urgent action is needed to reverse this trend.

During our walk with a colleague who lives in Malindi, he would show me houses that were built and have now been left empty.

“This house has three bedrooms,” he said.

I asked: “How much is a three-bedroom house?”

He replied: “You can get it for Sh7,000 only.”

I was shocked.

He explained that the rates were low because there were no tourists. I couldn’t believe that a three-bedroom house that is supposed to be going for more than Sh40,000 was being rented for Sh7,000.

All stakeholders, led by the county government of Kilifi, should put in place immediate and strategic interventions to restore Malindi to its former status as a premier tourist destination.

One of the things that can quickly be done is to invest in repairing and maintaining the key facilities and public spaces. Ensuring that hotels, roads, and attractions are in good condition will be vital in drawing back tourists.

There is also a need for a comprehensive marketing campaign to reintroduce Malindi to potential visitors. This will include highlighting its unique attractions, cultural heritage, and natural beauty to rekindle interest.

The Kilifi County government can also provide support and incentives for local businesses to adapt and thrive in the current tourism landscape. This could include grants, training, and resources to help them better serve visitors.

Lastly, we should foster collaboration between the county government, tourism boards, and the private sector. A unified approach will be more effective in addressing the challenges facing Malindi.

Malindi is not just another tourist spot; it’s a vital part of Kenya’s cultural and economic landscape. It deserves more than to be left in the shadows of its former self. The town’s revival will not only benefit the local economy but also restore its rightful place as a cherished tourist destination.

It is not yet over. With concerted effort and a shared vision, this beautiful town can once again thrive and welcome visitors with the warmth and charm that once made it a top destination.
