Kenyans decry costly bank purchase for electricity tokens as M-Pesa pay bill down

Customers on Saturday morning expressed frustration after being unable to purchase electricity tokens via M-Pesa pay bill, despite the service being less costly and reliable.

Many who spoke to The Eastleigh Voice have reported issues where transactions through the mobile money platform fail, while payments made through bank accounts continue to go through smoothly.

This inconsistency has arguably left numerous users struggling to top up their electricity, with many questioning why the mobile payment option was not functioning as expected.

“Normally, when I purchase a token worth Sh500 via the M-Pesa pay bill, the charge is just Sh5, and today having to opt for the bank option and went through, a Sh200 token purchase cost me Sh34,” said a customer who requested to remain anonymous.
