Kioni defends Matiang’i presidential bid amid claims supporters are being victimised in Jubilee Party

Kioni questioned what he termed double standards within the party, saying that some National Executive Committee (NEC) members were openly endorsing other presidential hopefuls and associating with rival political camps.

Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has defended Fred Matiang’i’s presidential bid, alleging that supporters of the former Interior Cabinet Secretary are being targeted within the party.
Kioni said there was growing inconsistency within Jubilee Party over how political endorsements are being handled, claiming that some members were being intimidated for backing Matiang’i while others openly support rival presidential candidates without facing any action.
In a post on social media, Kioni questioned what he termed double standards within the party, saying that some National Executive Committee (NEC) members were openly endorsing other presidential hopefuls and associating with rival political camps.
“How is it that some NEC members can openly endorse other presidential candidates, while others work hand in hand with our political competitors without consequence, yet the people facing intimidation and threats are junior staff, grassroots leaders, aspiring candidates, and the party’s most ardent supporters?” he posed.
Kioni maintained that his support for Matiang’i was consistent with defending the party’s ideals, insisting that there was nothing wrong with backing the former Interior Cabinet Secretary as Jubilee’s preferred presidential candidate.

“What crime did I commit by fighting for the party, defending its ideals, and openly endorsing Fred Matiang’i as our preferred presidential candidate? Why are those associated with this cause being singled out and victimised?” he asked.
The remarks come amid growing internal tensions within Jubilee over the party’s leadership direction and its positioning ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has criticised sections of Jubilee leadership for sending mixed political signals by associating with rival political figures.
The Registrar of Political Parties has also directed the party to resolve disputes over leadership changes before any amendments are registered, following Wambugu’s objections on the legality of the process and NEC resolutions.
