Fresh calculations on how to oust Ruto as Matiang'i meets Maraga over 2027 elections

Both Maraga and Matiang’i have publicly expressed interest in the presidency, setting up a political dynamic in which cooperation and negotiations could shape future alignments.

Opposition leaders are scheming and strategising on how to stop President William Ruto's reelection, with the latest meeting being between former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and former Chief Justice David Maraga, who are both presidential hopefuls.
Matiang'i, who is the Jubilee Party deputy leader, has signalled renewed efforts to consolidate opposition forces. This comes after meeting Maraga on what he termed ‘building a broad, united front committed to a better future for all Kenyans’.
In a statement on Friday, June 19, 2026, Matiang’i has framed the engagement as part of ongoing efforts to enhance opposition unity, saying that the united opposition seeks to liberate Kenya.
"Enhancing opposition unity as we seek to liberate Kenya. It was a pleasure catching up with Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga as we continue building a broad, united front committed to a better future for all Kenyans,” Matiang’i stated.
Maraga, who was Kenya’s Chief Justice between 2016 and 2021, has in recent years maintained a public posture often associated with constitutionalism and governance accountability.

His participation in politics continues to draw attention, given his stature in the judiciary and his influence in national discourse even after retirement.
Matiang’i leads opposition unity talks
Political realignment has been ongoing with increased emphasis on the formation of a common front to challenge President Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election, with Matiang’i being one of the key players at the heart of the new alignment, reportedly seeking to remove the president.
The meeting with Maraga follows a few days after Matiang’i also met with a group of leaders that belong to the political formation of Linda Mwananchi, led by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The back-to-back negotiations have fuelled speculations about potential ties between the leaders and a political coalition in the run-up to 2027 to unseat the current government, although no one has officially said that they are forming a coalition.
The public display of cooperation between the two leaders highlights shifting dynamics within opposition politics heading into the next election cycle.
Although no formal coalition announcement was made, the language used by both leaders pointed to attempts to rally support around a shared political agenda centred on governance reforms and accountability.
Maraga has in recent months increasingly taken public positions on governance and constitutional issues, positioning himself as a key voice in conversations around leadership and institutional integrity.
Matiang’i has also signalled political ambitions and has been linked to wider opposition consultations as leaders explore possible alliances ahead of 2027.
The Friday meeting also comes amid efforts by opposition figures to agree on a single presidential flagbearer.
