Kenya to roll out 1,000 electric vehicles for police officers- Ruto

President William Ruto has announced that the Kenyan government is set to introduce 1,000 electric vehicles for police officers and National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs). This initiative, according to the President, is part of the government's broader strategy to equip officers with the necessary tools to perform their duties more effectively.

In his address, President Ruto emphasised that the government intends to continue procuring these vehicles annually. The goal is to ensure that a significant number of officers, particularly those at specific levels within the service, are provided with electric vehicles.

"We are working on the first 1,000 vehicles. We will see if we can get 1,000 vehicles every year until we have every officer at a certain level with a car," he said.

The introduction of these electric vehicles is expected to enhance the mobility of police officers and NGAOs, allowing them to access various areas with greater ease.

The President highlighted that these vehicles would eliminate the need for fuel since each vehicle would be equipped with a charger. This will enable officers to recharge their vehicles while at their offices.

A fully charged battery is expected to cover a distance of up to 300 kilometres, with officers needing to recharge approximately every two days.

The President also indicated that the central government would lead this transition to electric vehicles, starting with the police officers and NGAOs.

"The first people to begin the journey of electric motor vehicles will be the central government, starting with the police and the National Government Administration Officers," he noted.

He highlighted the critical role that NGAOs play in the governance and development of the country. To further support their leadership in their respective areas, Ruto committed to providing the necessary resources. He believes that this support will help maximise their potential and contribute to the country's overall progress.

He made these remarks during a meeting at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete which brought together Regional Commissioners, County Commissioners, and Deputy County Commissioners.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, along with other senior government officials, was also present at the meeting.
