East African football legends to lead CHAN 2025 draw
Three East African football legends, McDonald Mariga (Kenya), Hassan Wasswa (Uganda), and Mrisho Ngasa (Tanzania), will lead the draws for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed three football legends from host nations Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will oversee the draws for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The event is set to take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 in Nairobi, as the competition prepares to run from February 1 to 28.
Former Kenyan international McDonald Mariga, Uganda’s Hassan Wasswa, and Tanzania’s Mrisho Ngasa have been selected to conduct the draw for the tournament’s eighth edition. Their selection highlights their illustrious careers and lasting legacies in African football.

Mariga, a former defensive midfielder, made history as the first Kenyan to play in the UEFA Champions League. During his time with Inter Milan, he won the Champions League, the Serie A title, and two Coppa Italia trophies. He also earned 40 caps for the Kenyan national team, scoring five goals, and had stints with clubs in Sweden and Spain.
Hassan Wasswa, celebrated for his dedication to Ugandan football, earned 75 caps for the Cranes during a career that spanned over a decade. The defensive midfielder also showcased his skills in Turkey and Saudi Arabia before retiring in 2021.
Mrisho Ngasa is revered as one of Tanzania’s greatest footballers. With over 100 appearances for the national team, he is Tanzania’s second most capped player and its all-time leading scorer with 25 goals. His achievements have cemented his place in East African football history.
