City Stars stun Gor Mahia to keep survival hopes alive

Nairobi City Stars dealt a major blow to Gor Mahia’s title hopes with a spirited 2-1 win at Dandora Stadium, as the relegation battlers snatched a crucial lifeline in the FKF Premier League survival race.

Nairobi City Stars pulled off one of the surprises of the FKF Premier League season with a determined 2-1 win over defending champions Gor Mahia at Dandora Stadium on Thursday afternoon - a result that dents K’Ogalo’s hopes of retaining their title.

With both Tusker FC and Police FC suffering shock defeats on Wednesday, Gor Mahia had a golden opportunity to close the gap at the top. But instead, they stumbled against a City Stars side fighting for survival at the bottom of the table.

City Stars made their intentions clear from the onset. Hansel Ochieng opened the scoring in the 4th minute, capitalising on a static Gor defence. Benson Omala, ever-reliable in front of goal, equalised six minutes later with a poacher’s finish - his 16th goal of the campaign.

But parity was short-lived. In the 16th minute, Vincent Owino calmly converted from the spot after City Stars were awarded a penalty, restoring their lead and boosting their hopes of securing a vital three points.

Earlier in the day, Kariobangi Sharks picked up a crucial 1-0 win over KCB FC, courtesy of a composed finish from Humphrey Aroko. The result lifted Sharks to 33 points, easing their relegation fears while extending KCB’s winless run to seven matches.

The loss leaves Gor Mahia third on the table with 53 points - missing the chance to leapfrog Tusker (55) and close in on leaders Police FC (58). With only three games remaining, and the Mashemeji Derby still pending, Gor’s route to the title is now far more complicated.

Meanwhile, City Stars climb to 30 points, just two behind 16th-placed Bidco United. With momentum now on their side, this win could prove decisive in their fight to avoid the drop.
