Vinicius rescues Brazil as Morocco earn valuable point in World Cup opener

The result leaves both teams with a point from their opening fixture and everything to play for in Group C.

Brazil were forced to settle for a point in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 match after battling to a 1-1 draw against Morocco in an entertaining Group C contest at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
The highly anticipated clash between the South American giants and Africa's leading contenders lived up to expectations as both sides showcased their quality in front of a packed crowd at the stadium that will host the tournament final.
Morocco struck first through Ismael Saibari, whose composed finish rewarded a confident start by the Atlas Lions. However, Vinicius Junior produced a moment of individual brilliance to restore parity before halftime and rescue Brazil from an opening-match defeat.
With coach Mohamed Ouahbi urging his players to approach the match without fear, Morocco looked the more adventurous side in the opening exchanges. Achraf Hakimi and Neil El Aynaoui both tested the Brazilian defence before the breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute.
Brahim Diaz split the Brazilian backline with a perfectly weighted pass that released Saibari. The PSV Eindhoven midfielder surged clear before delicately lifting the ball over goalkeeper Alisson Becker to hand Morocco a deserved lead.

The goal stunned Brazil, who struggled to find rhythm despite boasting a star-studded squad under Carlo Ancelotti. The five-time world champions eventually found their spark through Vinicius Junior.
The Real Madrid forward collected Bruno Guimaraes' pass on the left side of the penalty area, shifted onto his stronger right foot and unleashed a powerful strike into the far corner beyond Yassine Bounou to level matters in the 32nd minute.
The equaliser transformed Brazil's performance, and they nearly completed the turnaround before the break, only for Bounou to deny Lucas Paqueta's acrobatic effort.
Brazil emerged from the interval with greater urgency and created several opportunities to claim all three points. Bounou was again called into action to keep out Igor Thiago after a quick restart caught Morocco off guard, while Raphinha and Danilo were unable to beat the Moroccan goalkeeper despite getting clear sights of goal.
Morocco, however, remained dangerous on the counterattack and almost snatched victory in the closing stages. Alisson parried a fierce long-range strike from El Aynaoui before reacting sharply to deny Chemsdine Talbi on the rebound.
The result leaves both teams with a point from their opening fixture and everything to play for in Group C.
Brazil, seeking a record-extending sixth World Cup crown and their first since 2002, will turn their attention to a meeting with Haiti in their next outing. Morocco, meanwhile, continue their quest to build on their historic 2022 World Cup semi-final run when they face Scotland.
While neither side found the winning goal, the match offered an early glimpse of why both nations are considered serious contenders to progress deep into the tournament.
