The 2024-25 FKF Premier League season kicked off with thrilling matches as AFC Leopards and Mara Sugar celebrated impressive victories in their respective debuts. Here’s a recap of the opening weekend’s action.

Mathare United's return to the top flight was met with a rude awakening as they went down 4-0 to AFC Leopards at Dandora Stadium on Sunday in their opening match of the 2024-25 FKF Premier League season.

AFC Leopards, popularly known as Ingwe, scored twice in both halves to race to the top of the league standings. Rwandese forward Arthur Gitego opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, matching the record for the season's fastest goal, set just a day earlier by Shabana's Mathew Tegisi in their 1-1 draw with Bidco United.

Brian Munyendo added a second goal in the 16th minute, before Victor Omune and Sydney Lokale piled more misery on the 2008 league champions by scoring in the 73rd and 79th minutes, respectively, sealing a dominant performance by Ingwe.

Meanwhile, at the Green Stadium in Awendo, Mara Sugar enjoyed a triumphant debut in the top flight, defeating Kakamega Homeboyz 3-0. Mathias Isogol gave the league newcomers the lead in the 37th minute, followed by a second-half brace from Samuel Odaro in the 55th and 75th minutes, putting Mara Sugar on the path to a memorable first victory.

In the day's other match, Murang'a SEAL secured a 1-0 win away against Ulinzi Stars at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, leaving the soldiers with more questions than answers as their struggles from last season continued into the new campaign. Joe Waithira's 67th-minute goal marked Murang'a SEAL's 10th top-flight victory, adding to the nine wins they accumulated in their debut 2023-24 season.

The league will now take a break until September 14, 2024, when Round 2 matches resume.
