Several roads to be closed ahead of Nairobi City Marathon on Sunday

Several roads in Nairobi will be closed for the 3rd edition of the Nairobi City Marathon on Sunday, September 8, 2024

According to the Nairobi City Marathon website, the closures will occur at various times throughout the day.

The Expressway will be closed between James Gichuru and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from Saturday 10 pm to Sunday 4 pm.

Waiyaki Way will also be closed between James Gichuru and the Expressway entrance from Saturday midnight to Sunday 2 pm.

Processional Way will be closed between Haile Selassie and Kenyatta Avenue from Wednesday 9 am to Sunday 6 pm.

Kenyatta Avenue, between Processional Way and Uhuru Highway, will be closed from Sunday 5 am to Sunday 1 pm. Aerodrome Road will be closed from Friday 10 pm to Sunday 6 pm.

Bunyala Road, from Bunyala Roundabout to Print Fast Kenya, and Uhuru Highway, between Haile Selassie Roundabout and Capital Centre, will be closed from Saturday midnight to Sunday 2 pm.

Additionally, Thika Highway, at Exit A2 to Uhuru Highway towards Mombasa, University Way (between Uhuru Highway Roundabout and Slip Road), Simba Street, City Hall Way (between Simba Street and Parliament Road), and Harambee Avenue (between Taifa Road and Parliament Road) will be closed from Saturday midnight to Sunday 2 pm.

The Mombasa Road and Southern Bypass Likoni Road interchange will be closed from Saturday midnight to Sunday 11 am.

Kenyatta Avenue (the first two lanes from Parkside) will be closed from Friday 9 am to Sunday 9 pm, and both sides of Uhuru Highway between Bunyala Roundabout and A2 Thika will be closed from Saturday midnight to Sunday 2 pm.

Additionally, Harry Thuku Road, Koinange Street (between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue), Mama Ngina Street (between Simba Street and Kimathi Street), Taifa Road, and Parliament Road (between Harambee Avenue and Haile Selassie Avenue) will be closed from Saturday midnight to Sunday 2 pm.

The full marathon will commence at 6:45 am, with the last athlete expected to finish by 12:22 pm.

The half marathon will start at 7:30 am, followed by the 10km race at 9:00 am and the 6km fun run at 10:00 am.

In terms of prizes, the winners of the 42km race will receive Sh3.5 million.

The second and third-place finishers will earn Sh2.25 million and Sh1.5 million, respectively.

For the half marathon, the winners will be awarded Sh150,000, with Sh80,000 for second place and Sh50,000 for third place.

The first edition in 2022 had 10,000 participants which rose to 13,000 last year.

This year's event will feature a notable international presence, including 155 runners from China, 130 from the United Kingdom, 75 from the United States, and 56 from Tanzania.
