Microsoft to disable editing in Office 2019 for Mac from July 13

The change affects popular applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, and is being triggered by the expiration of a digital certificate required for the software to run in full mode.

Microsoft is set to disable key functionality in Office 2019 for Mac starting July 13, 2026, leaving millions of users unable to edit or create documents unless they upgrade to the new software.
The change affects popular applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, and is being triggered by the expiration of a digital certificate required for the software to run in full mode.
What will change for users?
From July 13, Office 2019 for Mac will enter what Microsoft describes as a “reduced functionality mode.”
Users will still be able to open documents and print files, but editing, saving changes, and creating new documents will be disabled.

The same restriction is expected to affect some older Office versions on iPad and iPhone devices, while Windows and Android versions remain unaffected.
The move effectively forces users still on Office 2019 for Mac to either upgrade to Microsoft 365, purchase Office 2024, or switch to browser-based Office tools.
Microsoft attributes the change to an expiring digital certificate used to validate the software. Because Office 2019 for Mac reached the end of support in October 2023, it is no longer eligible for updates required to renew the certificate.
The company says newer supported versions, including Microsoft 365 and Office 2021, will receive a certificate update that prevents disruption.
Critics, however, argue that the decision amounts to planned obsolescence, especially for users who purchased the software as a one-time lifetime license.
“Reduced functionality”, explained
Under the new system, Office 2019 apps will not be completely deleted from devices.
Instead, they will remain installed but restricted.
Users will still be able to:
Open existing documents
View content
Print files
But will lose the ability to edit documents, save changes or create new files, turning the software into a read-only tool.
The change is expected to affect individuals, students, and businesses still using Office 2019 for Mac, especially those who have avoided subscription-based Microsoft 365 plans.
Some users had previously been reassured that Office 2019 apps would continue functioning after support ended, but Microsoft has since updated its guidance to reflect the new limitation.
The decision has sparked criticism from users who feel locked into forced upgrades, particularly in regions and institutions where one-time software purchases remain common.
What can users do next?
Microsoft is encouraging affected users to upgrade to:
Microsoft 365 subscription plans
Office 2024 perpetual license
Web-based Office applications available through browsers
The company says these options will ensure continued access to full editing features and security updates.
While software end-of-support cycles are standard in the tech industry, the disabling of core features in already-purchased software is likely to intensify debate around digital ownership and long-term access to productivity tools.
