The Eugene meeting serves as the ninth stop of the 15-leg series, with valuable qualification points on offer ahead of the two-day Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4-5.

Multiple Olympic and world champion Faith Kipyegon and former world champion Timothy Cheruiyot will lead the Kenyan team at the ninth leg of the 2026 Wanda Diamond League, the prestigious Prefontaine Classic, set for Saturday in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
The Prefontaine Classic, one of the most celebrated meetings on the global athletics calendar, brings together the world's elite athletes as the road to the Diamond League final intensifies.
The Eugene meeting serves as the ninth stop of the 15-leg series, with valuable qualification points on offer ahead of the two-day Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4-5.
Kenya will be represented across several middle - and long-distance events, with a blend of established stars and emerging talent expected to challenge for top honours.
In the women's mile, all eyes will be on world record holder Kipyegon, who returns to one of her favourite hunting grounds alongside compatriot Dorcus Ewoi.
Kipyegon has consistently delivered outstanding performances in Eugene and will be among the favourites in what is expected to be another high-quality contest featuring some of the world's leading milers.
The men's Bowerman Mile, the signature event of the Prefontaine Classic, will feature Cheruiyot alongside compatriot Reynold Cheruiyot.
Named after legendary University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, the invitation-only race is regarded as one of the most prestigious mile competitions in world athletics and regularly attracts the strongest middle-distance field on the Wanda Diamond League circuit.
Cheruiyot, one of Kenya's most accomplished middle-distance runners, will be aiming to produce another commanding performance against a world-class field, while Reynold continues his rise among the country's next generation of elite milers.
Also, Festus Lagat will represent Kenya in the men's mile, while Noah Kibet will line up in the men's 800 metres.
Kenya will also field a strong contingent in the women's events. Margaret Akidor is entered in the two-mile race, Faith Cherotich and Doris Lemngole will compete in the women's 3,000 metres steeplechase, and Lilian Odira will represent the country in the women's 800 metres.
The Eugene meeting will also feature two of Africa's most in-form sprinters from Botswana. Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo heads into the Prefontaine Classic brimming with confidence after a dominant victory at the Oslo Bislett Games Diamond League in June, where he stormed to the men's 200m title in a season-best 19.84 seconds.
The performance saw Tebogo shave more than a tenth of a second off his previous season's best of 19.96, set at the Rabat Diamond League in May. Exploding out of the blocks, the 22-year-old seized control from the start and was never seriously challenged.
His compatriot, Busang Collen Kebinatshipi, will contest the men's 400m after arriving in Oregon in sensational form. Kebinatshipi claimed his second Diamond League victory of the season at the Meeting de Paris on June 28, clocking a meeting record of 43.54 seconds.
The time was just 0.01 seconds shy of his Botswana national record, set at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, and established a new Diamond League record, eclipsing the previous mark set by Michael Norman in 2022. His performances this season have firmly established him among the world's leading one-lap runners and as one of the standout contenders in Eugene.
The 2026 Wanda Diamond League season began in Shanghai/Keqiao on May 16 and continues across four continents and 15 cities before culminating in the season finale in Brussels. Athletes accumulate points throughout the series in pursuit of qualification for the Diamond League Final, where the coveted Diamond Trophy will be at stake.
