Detectives investigating the mob killing of a man at Mombasa's Marikiti market have arrested a fifth suspect after fresh intelligence from members of the public and analysis of CCTV footage linked him to the incident.
The latest arrest marks a significant development in the investigation into the killing, which occurred on June 22 in the busy market within Mombasa's central business district.
Police say the suspect, identified as Chaka Ndoro, also known as Hassan Mweru, was traced and arrested after members of the public reported seeing him in the Marikiti area.
According to investigators, detectives mounted an operation and apprehended the suspect before recovering a handcart believed to have been used during the attack.
The handcart has been preserved as an exhibit as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police said analysis of CCTV footage captured during the incident allegedly shows the suspect using the recovered handcart to strike the deceased on the head, inflicting injuries that investigators believe significantly contributed to the victim's death.
The arrest follows an earlier operation in which detectives rounded up 27 suspects in connection with the killing.
Following interviews, the recording of witness statements and examination of CCTV footage, investigators concluded that there was sufficient evidence to directly link four suspects to the offence through positive eyewitness identification and surveillance footage.
The four suspects are David Moki Motonyi, Sammy Chimvua, Idd Sudi Mohammed and George Otieno Ondiek.
They appeared before the Mombasa Law Courts on July 13, where the court granted investigators ten days to complete inquiries, record additional witness statements and finalise evidential processes.
Police have indicated that all five suspects are expected to appear jointly before the Mombasa Law Courts on July 23, for further directions and appropriate charges.
The case remains pending before the court.
