Legacy Football Academy has etched its name into East African football history after becoming the first team from the region to win a Gothia Cup Play-off A title, following a 1-0 victory over Sweden's Lerums IS in the Boys Under-14 final.
The Kenyan academy sealed the historic triumph at SKF Arena in Gothenburg on Saturday, with David Jesse Adama scoring the decisive goal to crown an outstanding campaign at the world's largest youth football tournament.
Legacy's road to the title was nothing short of dominant. The B14 side won all nine matches they played, scoring an impressive 33 goals while conceding only twice throughout the competition.
The team opened their campaign with a 4-0 victory over IF Centern Vit before defeating Solängens BK 7-1, thrashing IFK Nyköping 7-0 and beating Virestad IF 3-0 to top their group in commanding fashion.
Their winning momentum continued in the knockout rounds, where they eliminated IF Centern Blå 2-0 in the Round of 16, overcame Nyköpings BI 3-0 in the quarter-finals, defeated CEF 18 Tucumán 3-1 in the last eight and cruised past ProGen FC 3-0 in the semi-finals before edging Lerums IS in the final.
Head coach Derrick Otieno hailed the achievement as a landmark moment not only for the academy but for East African football.
"This trophy belongs to every player who has ever put on a Legacy jersey. These boys showed discipline and composure under pressure that you don't often see at this age. Winning it here, on this stage, as the first team from our region to do it—that's bigger than football," said Otieno.
Match-winner Adama described the victory as the fulfilment of a dream.
"Playing at the global stage has always been a dream, and today this win made it feel like a reality. But that goal was for the whole team and everyone back home supporting us," he said.
Legacy Football Academy sent five teams—B11, B12, B13, B14 and B16—to this year's Gothia Cup as part of an 89-member delegation. All five sides reached the quarter-finals, with the B14 squad emerging as the academy's standout performers by going all the way to lift the title.
The triumph marks a significant milestone for Kenyan youth football, underlining the growing quality of talent development in the country and reinforcing Legacy Football Academy's reputation as one of East Africa's leading football development institutions.
