President William Ruto congratulated the Junior Starlets on securing a second successive FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup berth, while Mike Sonko rewarded the team with Sh1 million after their commanding victory over South Africa.

President William Ruto has congratulated the Junior Starlets after the national U-17 women's team secured a second consecutive qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup with a victory over South Africa, as former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko rewarded the team with Sh1 million.
Ruto praised the players for making the country proud and pledged his full support as they prepare for the tournament in Morocco.
“You have made us very proud. I love you guys, you have made our country proud. Congratulations, and I'm very proud of you. You can count on my support one hundred per cent,” Ruto told the team.
The Junior Starlets booked their place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after defeating South Africa's Bantwana 3-1 in the second leg of the final qualifying round at Nyayo National Stadium.
The victory sealed a 5-1 aggregate win for Kenya, having beaten South Africa 2-0 in the first leg in Pretoria. The result secures the country's return to the global tournament after its historic maiden appearance in 2024.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya also congratulated the team, saying the players had once again raised Kenya's flag through their resilience, discipline, talent and fighting spirit.
“The Junior Starlets have done it again! Kenya’s U-17 Women’s National Team has once again flown our flag high by securing qualification to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup,” Mvurya said.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo described the victory as a major boost for women's football, saying it had firmly placed Kenya on the global stage and would inspire a new generation of players.
“A huge shoutout to the Harambee Starlets for their brilliant 3-1 victory over South Africa, earning a spot at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup!” Omollo said.
Sonko also joined in celebrating the team's success by awarding the Junior Starlets Sh1 million following their qualification.
The achievement marks another milestone for head coach Mildred Cheche, who guided Kenya to the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in 2024 and has now become the first Kenyan coach to lead a national football team to two FIFA World Cup tournaments.
The 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup will be held in Morocco from October 17 to November 7.
