You’ve up to 2027 to resit KCSE exams, KNEC CEO David Njeng'ere tells Kenyans

Njeng'ere encouraged both students and educators to prepare for a seamless transition as the CBC continues to take shape in the coming years.

Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) CEO David Njeng'ere has confirmed that the last Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam will be administered in 2027.

The announcement was made during the release of the 2024 KCSE exam results on Thursday.

"I wish to remind the public that the last KCSE examination will be administered in 2027," he said.

At the same time, anyone who wishes to repeat the national exams has been urged to take advantage before 2027.

"And, therefore, we wish to invite any person who wishes to do a repeat either partial or full to take advantage of the remaining three chances," Njeng'ere said.

This, according to KNEC, marks a significant milestone in Kenya's education system as the country transitions to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The 2027 exam will be the final opportunity for students to sit the KCSE test under the traditional system that has been the cornerstone of Kenya's education structure for many years.

Njeng'ere also acknowledged the determination of the cohort that began their KCSE exams in March 2021, a group that faced numerous challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This cohort, which began their KCSE examinations in March 2021, demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability during a challenging period in our education system," he remarked.

The 2024 KCSE exam cycle saw significant improvements in the administration process.

KNEC successfully managed 10,754 examination centres with the help of 101,250 professionals, including teachers, Ministry of Education officers, and security personnel.

"We didn't have a single case of early exposure of the second session," Ngejere said.

Looking forward, Njeng'ere encouraged both students and educators to prepare for a seamless transition as the CBC continues to take shape in the coming years.

Speaking during the release of the 2024 exam results, Education CS Julius Ogamba said KNEC will introduce a mid-year series of KCSE exams to be administered in July every year.  The exam will target candidates wishing to repeat or those who may have missed siting the examinations due to sickness or unexpected hardships.
