Several secondary schools across Kenya have been closed following student unrest, protests, and reported safety incidents, including riots and suspected arson cases affecting learning institutions in multiple counties.

Several secondary schools across Kenya have been closed following a wave of student unrest and a series of safety-related incidents.
The affected institutions include Lenana School, Nakuru Girls High School, Loreto High School Limuru, Moi Forces Academy Lanet and several others, with most closures occurring between late May and early June 2026.
The causes vary from school to school but largely stem from violent student riots, protests over school management and examination schedules, as well as broader disciplinary disputes.
Several institutions have also reported fires and suspected arson attacks targeting dormitories and administration blocks. In some cases, the incidents were linked to planned strikes or unrest during school events and evening prep sessions.

Most of the affected schools have not announced firm reopening dates, with many remaining closed indefinitely pending assessments and investigations. The situation has been particularly alarming at Utumishi Girls Academy, where a dormitory arson attack resulted in deaths and multiple injuries, intensifying concerns about student safety and security in schools across the country.
