Nine killed, several injured after matatu collides with lorry on Eldoret-Kitale road

Police said efforts to locate lorry driver who fled the scene are ongoing, and they have launched investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.

Nine people lost their lives on Friday morning in a tragic road accident in Chemoset, along the Eldoret-Kitale highway.

The crash involved an Isuzu lorry and a Great Rift Shuttle PSV which was carrying 15 passengers.

According to Soy Base Commander, the accident occurred around 9:10 am when the driver of the lorry, heading towards Kitale, veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the matatu, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

Police said the driver of the matatu also perished in the crash.

“As a result, the driver of the matatu and eight unidentified passengers were fatally injured on the spot, while one passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital,” the base commander said.

The matatu was carrying 11 adults and four children at the time of the accident. Police said several survivors sustained serious injuries and were taken to different hospitals in Eldoret for treatment.

 Lorry driver flees

However, the unidentified driver of the lorry fled the scene after the accident.

Police said efforts to locate him are ongoing, and they have launched investigations to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.

“The impact of the collision was severe, leaving both vehicles extensively damaged. Recovery operations are underway to tow the wreckage,” added the base commander.

Bodies of the deceased were moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for identification and post-mortem examinations.

Police have urged motorists to be cautious and adhere to traffic rules to avoid such devastating accidents.
