Rain or shine: Kenya braces for weather whiplash as rains persist and heat builds

Moderate afternoon rainfall is expected in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
It’s not yet time to put your umbrella away; dark clouds are still gathering over much of Kenya, with more rain and shifting temperatures expected in the days ahead.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a fresh advisory warning that several parts of the country will continue to receive rainfall from Friday, May 16 to through to Tuesday, May 20, next week.

Nairobi, parts of the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria Basin are among the areas set for more showers, while the coast and north-eastern regions are likely to experience soaring daytime heat.
As some areas brace for wet afternoons and cold nights, others will contend with blazing sun and rising temperatures, painting a picture of sharp weather contrasts across the country.
Moderate afternoon rainfall is expected in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi.
According to the meteorological department, the rains in these counties are expected to fall mostly in the afternoons, following cloudy mornings.
Light rains are also expected in the South Eastern lowlands, covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, and Taita-Taveta, as well as inland parts of Tana River County.
Heavier downpours have been forecast for several parts of the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin.
Counties likely to experience this include Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, and Uasin Gishu.
The same weather pattern is expected in Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok.
The department also warned that residents in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and the Central Rift Valley should prepare for very cold nights, with temperatures dropping below 10°C.
Counties listed under this category are Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, and Narok.
Meanwhile, high daytime temperatures are expected to affect the Coast and North-eastern regions, with readings rising above 32°C.
The counties in this list include Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo.
