Lamu's Mohamed Skanda elected National Youth Speaker

A youth leader from Lamu County has been elected as the National Youth Speaker during the 2024 National Youth Parliamentary session held at Parliament.

Mohamed expressed his gratitude and outlined his commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of young people across the country. "I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been elected as the National Youth Speaker," he stated.

"This role is a tremendous responsibility and a remarkable opportunity to amplify the voices of young people across our nation, more so the people of Lamu and the coast region."

Mohamed, who also serves as the Coordinator for Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) in Lamu County, has been at the forefront of addressing critical issues such as human rights violations and the controversial Finance Bill, which has sparked widespread debate due to concerns over high taxation.

His leadership in these areas has earned him recognition and respect within his community and beyond.

Mohamed extended his thanks to the youth of Lamu, the leadership of Lamu County Government, and all those who supported his campaign, including The Oslo Center, which plays a key role in supporting the National Youth Assembly.

"I wish to extend my deepest gratitude to the Almighty Allah, the Lamu Youth Assembly, and every young representative across Kenya who believed in my vision," he said.

The election of Skanda as National Youth Speaker is not only a personal achievement but also a moment of pride for the entire Lamu community.

MUHURI, who has been instrumental in his journey, celebrated his victory, highlighting it as a testament to his dedication to the youth of Kenya. The organisation expressed its pride in having supported Mohamed, recognising his new role as a significant win for the entire community.

The Oslo Center, an international organisation that supports democratic governance and human rights, also congratulated Skanda on his election. They emphasised that his leadership would be crucial in amplifying the voices of young people across Kenya, particularly in marginalised regions.
