President Ruto will address measures taken to achieve national security, and national values while also highlighting the achievements of his administration.

President William Ruto is set to address a joint sitting of Parliament next week on Thursday.

In a message to the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Ruto said that he will make his 2024 State of the Nation address on November 21, 2024.

“I wish to inform the house that I have received a message from His Excellency the President conveying that he intends to deliver the 2024 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, November 21, 2024,” Wetang’ula said.

President Ruto will address measures taken to achieve national security, and national values while also highlighting the achievements of his administration.

The address is an annual requirement of the constitution and this will be Ruto’s second State of the Nation since he took over power in 2022.

The Speakers of both houses ( National Assembly and Senate) will be expected to gazette the sitting scheduled for next week.

Article 132 of the Constitution states that; Once every year, a report, in an address to the nation, on all the measures taken and the progress achieved in the realisation of the national values.

Kenyans' challenges

The address comes at a time when there are cries by Kenyans over the cost of living since the Kenya Kwanza administration took over, rise in femicide cases, abductions and extra-judicial killings.

President Ruto’s government is facing growing criticism over unmet promises, especially regarding the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which has raised concerns about access to healthcare.

Despite the public outcry, the government has defended this new healthcare model and is encouraging Kenyans to sign up.

Beyond healthcare, the administration is also facing criticism for its approach to managing the economy and education.

The last State of the Nation address was done on November 9, 2023.
