Smart driving licence access expanded to 15 Huduma Centres

In Nairobi, the services are available at the General Post Office (GPO) Huduma Centre and Kibra.
Motorists can now access smart driving licence biometric services at 15 Huduma Centres across the country, the government has announced.
Huduma Kenya, working with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), said the move will make it easier for drivers to apply for or upgrade to the Smart Driving Licence without having to travel long distances.

In Nairobi, the services are available at the General Post Office (GPO) Huduma Centre and Kibra.
“Other regions providing the service include Mombasa, Kisumu, Nyeri, Garissa, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Kakamega, Eldoret, Thika, Kericho, Nakuru, and Kisii,” read a notice posted on their X handle on Friday.
The Smart Driving Licence is a card-based document with a microchip that stores biometric and identification data.
It contains the driver’s digital photograph, signature, licence class, and traffic offence record, replacing the old red booklet licences.
The licence also links to NTSA’s Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS), improving verification and security for law enforcement and other agencies.
To obtain the licence, applicants must register or log in to the NTSA TIMS portal using their National ID, KRA PIN, and phone number.
They then select the option to apply for or renew the licence, pay the processing fee, and book an appointment at a Huduma Centre for biometric capture.
At the appointment, motorists are required to present their National ID, their old licence if upgrading, and proof of payment. NTSA officers then capture fingerprints, a digital photo, a signature, and other biometric information.
Once the details have been recorded, applicants receive a confirmation SMS when their card is ready for collection at their chosen Huduma Centre.
The cost of the three-year licence is Sh3,050, which also applies for renewals.
Authorities have advised applicants to ensure their TIMS accounts are active and all required documents are ready before attending their appointments.
They also encouraged motorists to book early since the biometric service is only available in selected Huduma Centres.
