Four students arrested in Machakos after Matungulu Boys dormitory fire in Kangundo

Police in Kangundo, Machakos County arrested four Matungulu Boys students after a Sunday night fire destroyed four dormitories, injured several learners and displaced over 300, prompting indefinite school closure.

Police in Kangundo, Machakos County have arrested four students from Matungulu Boys Secondary School for their alleged role in a fire that destroyed four dormitories on Sunday night.
The fire, which broke out around 10:00 pm, left dozens of students injured and hospitalised. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as students fled the burning dormitories.
By the time police arrived, the dormitories were fully engulfed in flames. Parents rushed to the school upon hearing the news, while teachers and administrators worked to ensure all students were accounted for.
Reports indicate that more than 300 students lost personal belongings, including beds, bedding, uniforms, and books. Several students were admitted to a nearby hospital, although officials have not confirmed the exact number of injuries.
The school has since been closed indefinitely, with students sent home and parents allowed to collect their children.

School officials described the damage as extensive, warning that the cost of repairs and replacing lost items will be a heavy burden for families. They also expressed concern about the disruption to learning and the psychological impact on students who witnessed the fire.
Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire and the alleged involvement of the four arrested students. Authorities said the probe is ongoing and that more information will be released as it progresses.
The incident has sparked calls for improved safety measures in boarding schools, particularly regarding fire prevention and student supervision. With millions of shillings in property destroyed, parents and education officials are urging schools to review safety protocols to prevent similar tragedies.
“The damage here is running into billions of shillings. These expenses will go back to the parents,” said a Machakos County Parents Association official.
