KeNHA grants 10-day extension for expired permits, new applications after portal restoration

The Authority said the permits portal has been restored after a period of disruption, during which a surge in applications led to processing delays.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenya National Highways Authority) has granted transporters a 10-day extension for expired transport permits and for the submission of new permit applications following the restoration of its online permit application system.
In a notice issued on June 10, 2026, the Authority said the permits portal has been restored after a period of disruption, during which a surge in applications led to processing delays. “Since the portal went live, the Authority has received a high volume of permit applications,” the notice stated.
The Authority added that its verification and approval teams are working to address the backlog of applications. “Our team of verifiers and approvers is working around the clock to clear them, alongside the simultaneous system optimisation and resource allocation,” it said.
KeNHA said the extension is intended to ease pressure on transport operations and ensure continuity in cargo movement while the system is being stabilised and pending applications are processed.
Under the directive, trucks operating with expired permits will be allowed to continue transporting cargo specified in their permits until June 19, 2026. The same deadline applies to new permit applications submitted through the online portal.

The Authority noted that the measure is aimed at preventing disruptions in freight transport while it works to restore normal processing timelines and improve system performance amid high demand.
“The Authority has granted a further extension of 10 days,” KeNHA said, referring to both expired permits and new applications.
KeNHA further confirmed that the permit application system is now accessible online.
“The permit application system has now been restored. You may now access permit services via the following link: https://permits.kenha.co.ke/,” the notice stated.
The extension is expected to provide temporary relief to truck operators and logistics firms that depend on timely permit approvals for the movement of goods across the country’s highway network.
