Murkomen terms attack by goons on All Saints Cathedral ‘unfortunate and unacceptable’, vows action

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has announced a tougher nationwide crackdown on organised criminal gangs following the invasion of All Saints Cathedral, saying security agencies are pursuing suspects captured on CCTV as investigations into the incident continue.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has vowed a tougher crackdown on criminal gangs in Nairobi following the invasion of All Saints Cathedral by suspected goons, saying the Nairobi Metropolitan Police, together with newly recruited police officers, will strengthen efforts to combat gangs and improve security in the capital.
Speaking at AIC Plainsview South B Church on Sunday, Murkomen said the government was stepping up operations to address rising gang activity in urban areas, adding that suspects linked to the cathedral incident were already being pursued.
He confirmed that investigators are working with CCTV footage from the scene, which captured the attackers in detail.
“We know that they were captured on CCTV. The DCI is already analysing the CCTV camera. One of them was arrested immediately, and a number are being arrested,” he said.
Murkomen described the invasion of the cathedral as “extremely unfortunate and unacceptable,” adding that those responsible would face prosecution once investigations are completed.

The incident at All Saints Cathedral occurred on Friday morning when suspected hired goons invaded the church compound during a civil society post-budget meeting. CCTV footage shows the group arriving on motorbikes in the first wave before being pushed away by police.
However, minutes later, the group reportedly returned on foot, storming into the premises and disrupting the meeting. The gathering was abruptly ended as participants were dispersed, with reports indicating that some attendees were robbed during the chaos.
Murkomen said the government’s next phase of security operations would target organised gangs operating in Nairobi and other urban centres.
“Our next phase of security operation is to exterminate this threat of gangs,” he said.
He added that the Nairobi Metropolitan Police would play a key role in strengthening urban security operations, supported by additional manpower from recently recruited officers.
“This Nairobi with the Nairobi Metropolitan Police and with the strength of police officers who are going to graduate in October, actually September, about 10,000 police officers that we recruited recently, that strength will enable us to do a better job and to make our cities a safer place to live in,” he said.
Murkomen also pointed to previous security interventions in other towns, including Nakuru and Kitale, where similar operations had reduced gang activity.
