Six people have died, and three others have been seriously injured after a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a trailer at Kamara in Mau Summit along the Nakuru–Eldoret highway.
The accident occurred at about 8:30 pm on Friday in the Nyanja area of Kuresoi North Sub-County.
Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander John Kimutai said the trailer, which was travelling towards Nakuru, reportedly swerved from its lane before colliding with the oncoming matatu. The Eldoret Crossroads matatu was travelling from Nakuru to Eldoret with 11 passengers on board.
Five people, including the matatu driver, died on the spot following the impact of the collision, while a sixth victim succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Londiani Sub-County Hospital.
"The accident involved a Toyota Hiace belonging to Eldoret Crossroads. It had 11 passengers on board. The fatalities are all male adults. Three people suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital. The truck driver sustained minor injuries," Kimutai said.
Police later removed the wreckage of the two vehicles from the highway to allow traffic to resume as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
The latest tragedy comes amid growing concern over the rising number of fatal road accidents across the country.
Last week, the officer in charge of Makutano Police Patrol Base in Mwala Sub-County, Inspector Felistus Kateve Mbaluka, died after the vehicle she was driving collided head-on with an oncoming lorry along the Machakos–Kitui Road.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 2,150 people lost their lives in road accidents during the first half of 2026, representing an 11 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025.
The Authority's data shows that pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities, followed by motorcyclists, passengers and drivers, underscoring the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced road safety measures.
