Kenya has officially opened a diplomatic mission in Kingston, Jamaica, marking a significant expansion of its diplomatic footprint in the Caribbean as Nairobi seeks to deepen political, economic and cultural ties with the region.
The new High Commission officially commenced operations this week with Ambassador Mwenda Karisa arriving in Kingston as Kenya's inaugural resident envoy.
Describing the development as "a historic milestone for Kenya-Jamaica relations", the mission announced on its official X account that it looks forward to advancing cooperation between the two countries.
“Kenya looks forward to working closely with the government and people of Jamaica to advance our shared priorities and further strengthen the enduring friendship between our two nations, deepening political, economic, cultural and people-to-people ties," the mission said.
Karisa has been serving as Kenya's ambassador to Cuba, where the embassy in Havana had for years been Kenya's only diplomatic mission in the Caribbean.
From Havana, Kenya managed relations with a broad network of countries across the Caribbean, Central America and South America, including Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Ecuador, Colombia, the Bahamas, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and St. Kitts and Nevis.
The opening of the Kingston mission makes Jamaica Kenya's second resident diplomatic mission in the Caribbean, allowing Nairobi to strengthen engagement with Jamaica while supporting relations across the wider region.
The Caribbean holds particular diplomatic significance for Kenya and Africa because it is home to large populations of African descendants.
The African Union recognises the African diaspora as the continent's "sixth region", making engagement with Caribbean states an important pillar of Africa's broader diaspora diplomacy.
The new mission comes as President William Ruto's administration continues to expand Kenya's diplomatic presence abroad.
Since taking office in 2022, Nairobi has opened several new diplomatic missions as part of a strategy to broaden its global engagement, strengthen economic diplomacy and deepen political partnerships beyond its traditional spheres of influence.
The establishment of a resident mission in Jamaica is expected to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture and multilateral diplomacy while giving Kenya a stronger diplomatic platform in the Caribbean.
