Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has raised concerns over slow KIEMS kit identification in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, urging the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to resolve the delays.
Speaking while touring polling stations on Thursday, Malala said voting had generally begun peacefully, with the IEBC opening polling stations on time and residents turning out in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights.
He, however, said some KIEMS kits were operating slowly, particularly during the identification of elderly voters, resulting in delays at several polling stations.
"The KIEMS kit is a little bit slow, but we urge the IEBC to rectify any technical issues that we are facing right now," Malala said.
He explained that the delays were not necessarily due to system failure but difficulties in recognising the fingerprints of some elderly voters. According to Malala, the IEBC had assured his team that special KIEMS kits or alternative arrangements would be provided to speed up identification for elderly voters.
Malala urged voters to remain patient and avoid leaving polling stations without casting their ballots.
"No matter how long it takes, please do not get tired or leave the queue. Stay patient and continue exercising your democratic right," he said.
He also appealed to voters to remain near polling stations after voting, saying they should help guard the integrity of the electoral process.
"This is your day. When you cast your vote, you have the right to go outside the polling station and wait. We are going to guard our votes," he said.
Malala further called for greater accountability among security officers deployed during the by-election, saying all police officers should wear proper uniforms and display their official service numbers. He also questioned the presence of government vehicles allegedly operating in the constituency without registration plates.
The Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election was occasioned by the death of former MP David Kiaraho.
Nine candidates are contesting the seat, with the IEBC saying polling stations opened as scheduled and that voters still in queues by the official closing time would be allowed to cast their ballots.
