The death toll from Thursday night’s road crash in eastern Uganda involving primary school pupils has risen to 24, after three more children succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment
This is according to an update issued by Michael Kananura, the Public Relations Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, on Friday night.
The accident involving pupils of King David Junior School occurred at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa-Mbale Road on Thursday night. It claimed 21 lives at the site, including 20 children and an adult. Three more succumbed later while receiving treatment.
The pupils were returning from a study tour on Thursday night when the bus they were travelling in reportedly developed a mechanical fault at around 8:00 pm. The driver is said to have lost control before the vehicle crashed.
“The school trip departed Kampala at approximately 5:00 am using two buses and two taxis (drones). The other vehicles, which were not involved in the crash, safely returned to Kampala with all their occupants,” the officer said.
Police say 18 bodies have since been positively identified, three remain unidentified at Kapchorwa Hospital, and three others are at Mbale Hospital.
At the same time, 23 victims remain admitted at Kapchorwa Hospital and are receiving treatment.
“The driver of the bus involved in the crash has not yet been formally identified. However, it is believed that he sustained critical injuries and is among the victims receiving treatment in Mbale,” he added.
Meanwhile, all surviving pupils who did not require admission have safely returned to Kampala aboard a Gateway Bus.
The Ministry of Education and Sports has also announced a temporary suspension of all educational trips nationwide to allow for a comprehensive investigation into recent crashes, the development of road safety guidelines, and nationwide sensitisation targeting schools, transport providers and other stakeholders.
School groups currently on trips have been directed to immediately report to the nearest police station, with officers providing escorts where necessary to ensure learners’ safe return.
