President Ruto calls for end to banditry, insecurity in Northern Kenya

President William Ruto on Friday urged communities in Northern Kenya to abandon retrogressive cultural practices prevalent in the Kerio Valley and other areas afflicted by banditry and insecurity.

During his development tour in Baringo County, he expressed concern about how these regions have lagged due to insecurity rooted in outdated cultural practices.

"This is the time for us to step forward, work together, and put our capabilities and energies to optimal use for our country's economic take-off," he said.

He emphasised the government's commitment to transforming marginalised areas and creating more opportunities.

The president highlighted initiatives such as the launch of Kenya Medical Training and Technical and Vocational Training Centers to transform these regions.

He mentioned the Silale Geothermal Project, which he said would create job opportunities for youth in marginal areas and help disengage them from harmful cultural practices.

"The geothermal project is a major investment that will attract investors in green energy and position the country as a leading manufacturing hub," he claimed.

He also highlighted the Sh45 billion Ortum Cement Factory in West Pokot as another significant investment project that will help transform the region.

He encouraged local pastoralist communities to desist from violence and support the government's efforts to eradicate insecurity, a significant impediment to investors.

"We must join hands to collectively end the prolonged insecurity that undermines our peace, education, and economic success," he said.

Ruto announced plans to build military barracks in troubled zones to enforce security and rehabilitate affected social amenities.

He inspected the construction of the North Rift Vocational College and officially opened the Konza Digital Skills Laboratory in the Tiaty constituency before launching the Kenya Medical Training College at Chemolingat.

He also issued title deeds to more than 2,500 people.

The president launched the Last Mile Water Connectivity Programme in Muserech, Eldama Ravine constituency.
