The exercise saw the disposal of 3,987 kilogrammes of cannabis, alongside 25 sachets of cocaine that weighed 287 grams. The event marked a key step in ensuring seized narcotics are permanently removed from circulation.
“This move underscores the commitment of the criminal justice system in combating the use, sale and distribution of narcotic drugs, fostering safer communities for all,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stated.
The destruction of the drugs comes after recent successful operations carried out across various regions in the country. These operations have led to the arrest of suspected traffickers and the seizure of significant quantities of narcotics.
On April 6, detectives from the Mombasa Anti-Narcotics Unit arrested a suspect described as a notorious drug trafficker in the Magaoni area of Msambweni.
The officers, acting on intelligence, intercepted a public service vehicle and conducted a search that uncovered 200 grams of heroin hidden in the suspect’s left trouser pocket.
Following the arrest, the man directed the officers to his house, where they found an additional 19 packages of cannabis. He was taken to Kilindini Port Police Station for processing.
Just a few days earlier, on April 2, police in Kamagambo arrested another suspected trafficker after a tip-off from the public. The officers intercepted a matatu on its way to Kisumu from Migori and found two bags packed with 401 rolls of bhang. The consignment weighed 34.4 kilogrammes and had an estimated street value of Sh1,032,000. Interestingly, the suspect was transporting only students at the time, possibly believing this would reduce suspicion.
In a separate case on March 29, a team from the Anti-Narcotics Unit and Operations Action Team raided a rented house in Maji Mazuri, Mwiki. There, they arrested three individuals and seized a substantial amount of cannabis sativa hidden in 67 bales and five sacks.
These incidents are part of the broader strategy by the DCI and other enforcement agencies to dismantle drug networks and limit access to narcotics.
The collaborative approach between different arms of government continues to strengthen the war on drugs, with more arrests and seizures expected in the coming months.
