Wajir set to host historic Madaraka Day as preparations near completion

Internal Security PS Raymond Omollo confirmed that the main stadium is currently between 65 and 70 per cent complete, with construction advancing at a pace expected to achieve full completion at least two weeks ahead of schedule.

The government has expressed confidence in the state of preparedness for this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, scheduled to take place at Wajir Stadium, noting steady progress in key infrastructure and logistical arrangements.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the ongoing works, Internal Security PS Raymond Omollo confirmed that the main stadium is currently between 65 and 70 per cent complete, with construction advancing at a pace expected to achieve full completion at least two weeks ahead of schedule.
At the same time, key road infrastructure within Wajir town and along its access routes is under active construction, alongside improvement works at the County Commissioner’s residence, which will serve as the venue for the official State luncheon.
“We are encouraged by the progress made so far and the strong collaboration between the national and county governments. From the stadium to roads, water, and power, all key infrastructure is on course, and we are confident that Wajir will be ready ahead of time to host a successful Madaraka Day celebration,” said the PS, who was accompanied by Defence PS Patrick Mariru and representatives from various ministries, departments, and agencies.
The preparation works are ongoing in close collaboration with the county government, in efforts to make the historic event, being the first time Madaraka Day will be held in the Northern Kenya region, a success.

The preparations include water supply connections, borehole drilling and reticulation, as well as the installation of generators, a move that has brought notable stability to electricity supply across the area.
“This will be a historic moment for the people of Wajir and the entire Northern Kenya region. As a Government, we are proud to take national celebrations to all parts of the country, ensuring that every region feels part of our national journey and development,” PS Omollo said, noting the government’s firm commitment to delivering a celebration that reflects national unity and inclusivity.
A series of exhibitions and public engagement activities will be held in the weeks leading up to 1st June, aligned with this year’s theme of “Education, Skills, and the Future”.
