Residents and businesses in Mandera may soon see an end to prolonged electricity rationing after significant progress was made in efforts to restore a stable power supply, according to Mandera East Member of Parliament (MP) Hussein Weytan.
MP Hussein announced the development after inspecting Kenya Power’s Mandera station, where ongoing work aims to boost electricity generation and distribution in the county.
During his visit to the power station, he met technical teams overseeing the restoration efforts and received updates on progress made in stabilising power generation and distribution systems.
“I had the chance to visit the KPLC power station in Mandera. My primary goal was to assess the ongoing efforts to restore a stable and reliable electricity supply for our community,” said Hussein.
The MP said he was encouraged by the progress so far and expressed optimism that the electricity rationing programme affecting residents and businesses would end.
“During my visit, I engaged with the technical teams and received updates on the advancements made in power generation and distribution. I’m encouraged by the progress so far and am optimistic that the electricity rationing programme impacting our residents and businesses will conclude as of today,” he said.
For years, Mandera has struggled with inadequate electricity supply, a challenge that has affected daily life and slowed economic activities in the region. Frequent power interruptions have disrupted households, businesses, schools, health facilities and other institutions, forcing residents to endure long periods without reliable electricity.
The power shortages have been a major concern for residents, with businesses reporting losses due to interruptions and increased costs of running alternative power sources. Schools and health facilities have also faced challenges in delivering services during periods of power outages.
Residents have often expressed frustration over the slow pace of improvements, arguing that unreliable power supply has continued to affect economic growth and service delivery.
The legislator acknowledged the hardships during the rationing period and thanked residents for their patience as efforts to restore normal power supply continued.
He said the interruptions had brought difficulties to households, businesses, educational institutions and healthcare facilities, but noted that authorities were hopeful the improvements being undertaken would result in a more consistent electricity supply.
The MP also called on residents to remain hopeful as restoration efforts continue, expressing confidence that the electricity generation machines would operate efficiently and provide reliable energy to the county.
