ChatGPT can now automatically manage saved memories

OpenAI has begun rolling out an update that enables ChatGPT to automatically manage, sort, and prioritise saved memories, addressing user complaints about “memory full” notifications.

The feature is available globally to Plus and Pro users on the web, offering enhanced control over how the AI recalls past interactions.

Previously, ChatGPT’s memory system had limited storage capacity, often resulting in frustrating “memory full” messages that forced users to repeat information.

The new system allows ChatGPT to clean up less relevant data, reorder memories by recency and importance, and avoid memory errors. Users can also search, sort, and re-prioritise memories directly in settings.

ChatGPT’s memory comprises saved memories, explicitly shared information, and referenced chat history, which helps maintain conversational continuity.

Users can manage memories under Settings > Personalisation > Manage Memories, where they can view, delete, or disable the feature.

This update represents a significant enhancement, making ChatGPT a more capable and personalised digital assistant, although free-tier users still have limited memory functions.

Notifications appear when memories are updated, giving users options to view or delete them.

End-to-end encryption is not included in this feature, reserved for WhatsApp, Meta’s flagship messenger.
