The 2026 Prinsloo 7s will enter its Cup quarterfinal stage on Sunday with eight teams still in contention after an opening day on Saturday that produced unbeaten pool winners, surprise performers and several early upsets at Nakuru Athletic Club.
MMUST Rugby have emerged as one of the teams to watch after an impressive opening day that earned them a place in the Cup quarter-finals.
The Kakamega side opened with a memorable 19-14 victory over defending champions Strathmore Leos before edging Daystar Falcons 10-7 to secure top spot in Pool B.
They wrapped up their campaign with a victory over Kisumu RFC and will now face Kenya Harlequins in what promises to be one of the standout quarter-finals at 11:20 am on Sunday.
Harlequins head into the last-eight clash knowing they have already tested themselves against one of the tournament favourites. They defeated Embu RFC 26-7 and Mwamba RFC 12-5 before falling 12-10 to Kabras RFC, a result that was still enough to send them through.
Kabras, meanwhile, arrive in the knockout stage unbeaten after opening with a 26-12 victory over Mwamba RFC.
The Sugarmen registered Saturday's biggest winning margin with a 47-0 rout of Embu RFC before edging Kenya Harlequins 12-10 to finish top of Pool A and set up a quarter-final meeting with Daystar Falcons at 10:40 am.
Daystar also impressed during the pool stage, opening with a commanding 41-0 victory over Kisumu RFC before suffering a narrow 10-7 defeat to MMUST Rugby and playing out a 5-5 draw against Strathmore Leos. Those results were enough to secure second place in Pool B and a place in the quarter-finals.
Tournament newcomers KU Blak Blad have also turned heads on their Prinsloo 7s debut. They came from behind to beat hosts Nakuru RFC 12-7, followed it up with a 17-12 victory over Menengai Oilers and sealed top spot in Pool D with a 17-5 win over Impala RFC.
Their reward is a quarter-final against Nondescripts RFC at 11:00 am, with Nondies advancing after wins over Catholic Monks and NYS Spades.
The final Cup quarter-final at 11:40 am will see defending National Sevens Circuit champions KCB Rugby take on hosts Nakuru RFC. KCB remain unbeaten after defeating Nondescripts 29-12, shutting out NYS Spades 14-0 and completing the job against Catholic Monks, while Nakuru recovered from their opening defeat to Blak Blad by beating Impala RFC and Menengai Oilers to delight the home crowd.
Before the Cup quarter-finals get underway, attention will be on the Bowl Cup quarter-finals, where Mwamba RFC face Kisumu RFC, Menengai Oilers meet NYS Spades, Strathmore Leos take on Embu RFC and Catholic Monks play Impala RFC.
